The art market has shown a remarkable ability to recover from the depths of the 2020 pandemic. The numbers speak for themselves, as Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips global auction sales jumped 70% in 2021, followed by a further 13% increase last year, a new all-time high for the auction market. The most remarkable aspect about last year’s result was that this took place during a time of great geo-political uncertainty, and with strong economic headwinds gathering pace in the second half of the year. So are these signs of the resilience of today’s art market, or just a lag effect that will start to play out in 2023?
