Women artists set new records
Women artists continue to rise despite a challenging year for the art market. Auction sales by Old Master, Impressionist, Modern, Post-War and Contemporary women artists reached $825.8 million at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips last year, up 7.1% year-on-year, and marking a new market peak. The number of lots sold by women artists also reached a new high in 2023, as 3,827 lots were sold, up 20.8% from 2022.
We are delighted to launch our third report on women artists, which combines artists from across the Old Masters, Impressionist, Modern, Post-War and Contemporary auction market. As much as the report sheds light on frequently reported gender inequalities in the auction market, our findings also highlight encouraging signs that the market is changing.
