Scottish artist Caroline Walker (b. 1982 in Dunfermline) is best known for her paintings of women at work or engaged in other forms of labour. Often portraying anonymous women, her paintings question the concept of femininity and how this is depicted across everyday interiors and spaces. These women are typically shown within a much larger physical setting, drawing attention to not only the figure themselves, but the space that they are inhabiting. This captures the experience of womanhood, juxtaposed with the blurred line between public/private space. In turn, this draws attention to gender roles, exposing expected societal behaviours for women that are historically dictated by whether a space is considered public or private. Walker earned a BA in Painting at the Glasgow School of Art in 2004, and an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London, in 2009. She currently lives and works in London.
