Hong Kong auction sales down in 2023, but the market holds up better than New York and London
The Marquee evening sales at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips in Hong Kong this autumn raised a total of HK$1.7 billion (US$220.6 million), against the pre-sale estimate of HK2.2 billion to HK$3.0 billion. The results were slightly below (-3.6%) from Autumn 2022, but 21% lower than May 2023. Overall, Hong Kong Marquee evening sales this year (Spring and Autumn) were down 7% compared to 2022. This compares to a year-on-year decline in New York’s Marquee evening sales of 36% and a 24% fall in sales for London Marquee evening sales in 2023.
