In this week’s ArtTactic Podcast, we’re here with Scott Reyburn, art market correspondent for Bloomberg News, to recap last week’s Post-War & Contemporary auctions in London. With last week’s evening sales producing a total 30% less than the same sales a year ago, Scott discusses to what extent this was due to a fall in the strength of the market versus a lack of supply of blue-chip artworks on the auction block. Then, he addresses the topic of art market fatigue, one that has been written about frequently over the past few weeks.  Scott tells us if it’s a real phenomenon, if it’s a bad thing and if market participants have conversed with him about potentially changing things in the future to avoid this sensation. Lastly, Scott reveals if we are still seeing increasing participation in major Post-War & Contemporary auctions from non-US and European collectors.

First, Thomas discusses the diversity of the exhibitors in terms of what they show as well as where they originate. Then, he talks about the cross-over effect he witnesses at the fair, in which collectors are uniquely exposed to several collectibles within one fair. Also, Thomas reports on the level of sales activities at the fair thus far and tells us if individuals are starting to view other luxury goods such as watches and jewelry as alternative asset classes similar to fine art.

First, Bernadine discusses a current art world dilemma, in which museums have difficulty locating artworks for upcoming exhibitions, while collectors also have no medium to make their artworks available to museums for shows. Then, she discusses the process in which collectors can upload their works onto the site, how museum curators peruse artworks on the online platform and ultimately how these two can connect. After being on the podcast nearly a year ago, Paul recalls how active the art lending landscape has been for Borro since then. Then, Paul shares his response to last month’s impressive Post-War and Contemporary auctions and elaborates on the ideal economic and art market conditions that induce the greatest amount of art lending activities. Also, he tells us how frequently collectors are borrowing against their artworks in order to finance additional art purchases and if he sees this trend growing in the near-future.
