Auction Analysis: London Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sales – February 2019

The February Impressionist & Modern sales at Sotheby’s and Christie’s in London totalled £167,180,000 across the three evening sales, representing a decrease in the hammer total of 16.5% from February 2018. The combined sales total ended up well below the pre-sale estimate of £199,420,000 – £266,830,000.

Impressionist & Modern Art Evening sales down 16.5% from last year: At £167.2 million, London’s June Impressionist & Modern evening sales were down 16.5% from 2018, and 28.8% from 2016

Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale was down 39.1% from February last year.  Sotheby’s total market share came in at 37.7% (down from 51.7% in February 2018, and 65.7% in February 2016).

Christie’s adds more guarantees: Christie’s gave guarantees for 11 lots in total (40.7% of the total sale value by volume).
