In the first instance, Katie gives us a sense of the size of the art lending industry in Europe. Katie shares to what extent the art lending industry is has grown in the past few years. She reveals if it has become difficult to value art given recent global economic volatility.  Additionally Katie explains why Europe needs to regulate this area of the market as occurs in the United States.

Lastly, Katie shares her opinion on the strength of the contemporary art market currently in Europe.

In this week’s episode of the ArtTactic Podcast, Gavin Delahunty joins us.

Gavin Delahunty is the Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art. First of all, he joins us to discuss his critically acclaimed exhibition, Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots.

First, Gavin reveals to us what inspired him to curate the largest survey of Jackson Pollock’s black paintings ever assembled.

Then, he takes us inside the process of locating the artworks around the world. Ultimately convincing collectors and museums to lend their artworks for the exhibition. Also, Gavin shares with us what having a high-quality, critically acclaimed exhibition such as the Pollock show has benefitted the city of Dallas. More broadly he gives his impressions of Dallas’ growing contemporary art scene.

Given the growth of the contemporary art market, Gavin explains to what extent, as a contemporary art curator for an institution, the art market plays in his job. Finally, Gavin speaks about the Dallas Museum of Art’s free admission initiative and to what extent he is witnessing an expanded audience at the museum as a result.

First, Michael defines two types of art flipping, one which is measured by the duration of time in which an artwork appears then re-appears at auction and the other, in which an artwork is sold at auction only a short period of time after being created. Analyzing the first type of art flipping, Michael tells us that while on average the holding period of an artwork has decreased over time, the current holding time is actually barely longer than it was over the past few years during the art market peak.
