Through the mediums of painting and animation, the artwork of Tala Madani (b. 1981, Tehran) explores the themes of gender, power structures and group dynamics, to break down preconceived roles and stereotypes. With a particular focus on the construction of the male identity and depicting mostly naked, bald and middle-aged men engaged in awkward situations, her paintings oscillate between the figurative and the abstract, and with an ever present contrast between humour and seriousness, play and harsh reality. Madani graduated with a BFA from Oregon State University in 2004 and with an MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2006. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
