The analysis is based on four years of data from just over 350 auctions and over 61,000 lots sold in New York, London, Hong Kong, Paris, Geneva, Milan and Amsterdam. The report looks at geographical trends, auction house trends and trends by collecting categories during this period.

Single owner collections have raised $3.56 billion since 2016, accounting for an average 9.3% of total sales during this period (ranging from 4.8% in the first half of 2019 to 15.7% in 2018)
Between 2016 and 2019, Christie’s accounted for 58.8% of the sales value generated by single owner sales (40.5% of this can be attributed to the Rockefeller collection)
52% of the top 25 single owner collections have come from the so-called Silent Generation, collectors born between 1925 and 1945
