Through her signature pop-surrealist style, the artwork of African-American artist Nina Chanel Abney (b. 1982, Chicago), captures the frenetic pace of contemporary culture, exploring themes of racial conflict, sexuality, religion and art history. She constructs her narratives from personal experiences and current events, merged with traditional storytelling. She works on a large scale, combining representation and abstraction, with flat planes of bold colour. Abney graduated with a BFA in studio art and computer science at Augustana College, Illinois in 2004 and an MFA from Parsons School of Design, New York in 2007. She lives and works in New York.
