Colombian artist María Berrío (b. 1982, Bogotá) is best known her large-scale, brilliantly coloured paintings, produced through a meticulous process of collaging layers of Japanese paper with watercolour. Spurred by contemporary social and political realities, she lists poetry, folklore, and the realms of magic as her sources of inspiration to imagine alternative views of present-day realities, especially those faced by migrants, women, and children. Berrío earned a BFA at Parsons School of Design, in New York in 2004, and an MFA at the New York School of Visual Arts, in 2007. She currently lives and works in New York.
