The 2nd edition of this ArtTactic report provides a unique insight into Latin American Modern and Contemporary artworks sold at auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips from 2016 to 2021. Sales locations include London, New York, as well as Hong Kong and Paris, which are newly included this year. Over 5,200 lots and more than 650 artists were analysed, across dedicated Latin American sales, Impressionist and Modern day and evening sales, and Post- War and Contemporary incubator, day, and evening sales. For this edition of the report the inclusion of Impressionist and Modern day sales and Post-War and Contemporary incubator sales are also new features.
Latin American auction sales weather the Covid-crisis in 2020, and are set for a market recovery in 2021.
Auction sales of Latin American artists at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips saw a 16.6% decline in 2020 compared to 2019, showing a more resilient market compared to the global sales of 20th and 21st Century art, which fell 35.3% in 2020. The first 7 months of the year have also started positively, with 2021 sales likely to exceed last year’s levels and set the Latin American art auction market back on track.
