Teetering on the edge of abstraction and representation, the vibrant and expressive compositions of Los Angeles based artist Christina Quarles (b. 1985, Chicago), explore the ways that race, gender and sexuality intersect to form complex identities. Featuring polymorphous figures arranged in contorted positions in space, Quarles’ paintings convey her fragmented and multiple sense of self, which she describes as portraits not of looking at the body but of living within it, looking out at the world. Quarles received a B.A. from Hampshire College in 2007 and an M.F.A. from Yale University in 2016. That same year she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture.
