New York’s evening sales of Post-War and Contemporary art down 31.5% year-on-year, which is the lowest result since November 2011.

The overall evening sales total for Post-War and Contemporary art came in at $581.8 million, which was at the lower end of the pre- sale estimate of $542.8 million to $780.5 million. The total was 31% lower than New York’s May sales and 31.5% lower than 12 months ago. This is the lowest evening sales result in New York since November 2011, when auctions raised $555.8 million in sales.

Contraction in auction sales gathering pace in the second half of 2019.

The weaker sales this season comes on the back of a 33% decrease in evening sales of Impressionist and Modern art earlier in the week. This meant that the total evening sales across both Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary auctions raised $437.3 million less this week compared to 12 months ago.
