Top end of the auction market recovers after a weak Spring season

After a weak sales season in May this year, which saw auction sales decline by 42% from May 2022, the November Marquee week showed positive signs of recovery. New York’s Marquee evening sales at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips this November raised a total of $1.56 billion, against the pre-sale estimate of $1.51 billion to $2.00 billion. The results were 31.1% lower than November 2022 and 19.7% lower than November 2021, but came in 29.8% higher than May 2023. Overall, New York Marquee evening sales this year (May and November) are down 36.1% compared to the same period in 2022.
