Jittery London auctions show that the art market remains fragile
With the backdrop of increasing geo-political uncertainty, London’s Marquee evening sales at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips last week raised a total of £114.2 million, against the pre-sale estimate of £123.8 million to £180.3 million. The sales results were 28.1% lower than October 2022 and 12.2% lower than October 2021. The overall sell-through rate across all the evening auctions came in at 89.2% (down from 97.7% in October 2022). A total of 14 lots were withdrawn ahead of or during the auctions.
