Market softening continues, despite a new European record for Klimt
Following on from the cautious results in February and May of this year, the Marquee evening sales at Christie’s and Sotheby’s in London this week raised a total of £219 million, against the pre-sale estimate of £216 million to £286 million. The result was 22% lower than June 2022, but could have been significantly worse, had it not been for the sale of Gustav Klimt’s Dame mit Fächer (Lady with a Fan), which sold for £74 million at Sotheby’s, accounting for more than a third of total sales value.
