One of the most celebrated painters of his generation, Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie (b. 1977, Baia Mare), is best known for his large, dark, and dynamic canvases, that weave together his personal memories with collective trauma, both past and present. Fusing the figurative and the abstract, he borrows stylistically from across the art historical canon, from the sombre, dramatic chiaroscuro of Renaissance painting to the Abstract Expressionists’ experimentations with surface and texture. Ghenie graduated from the University of Art and Design, in Cluj, Romania, in 2001. He currently lives and works between Cluj, Berlin, and London.
