Yang Fudong was born in Beijing in 1971. He graduated from Middle School of Fine Arts and from China Academy of Fine Arts, Oil Painting Department. Yang Fudong is a Chinese video artist and photographer. He began shooting his first film “Estranged Paradise” which was completed and premiered at Documenta XI in 2002. That year he also started shooting what was to become five-part cycle film “Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest”, which was completed in 2007 and which is probably his best known work to date. It has been shown in its entirety at The Venice Biennale in the same year. Parts of it has been shown at Renaissance Society in Chicago, Castello di Rivoli in Turin and Kunsthalle Wien. Yang Fudong appears with Maggie Cheung and Zhao Tao in Isaac Julien’s TEN THOUSAND WAVES (2010) which was shot in China and included poems by Wang Ping.
