Paul McCarthy is an artist in Los Angeles, California, born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1945. He studied at the University of Utah as well as at the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of Southern California. Later, he taught art at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1982 to 2002. He has worked with an extensive variety of media, including video, performance, sculpture, painting, and installation. His subject matter is often transgressive, particularly in his choice of materials, which have ranged from blood to faeces. He often experiments with perceived technical boundaries in art, such as when he used his body as a paintbrush. He is often associated with the artistic Happenings movements and the artist Allan Kaprow.
