Xu Bing was born in Chongqing in 1955. He graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing in 1987. Xu Bing’s work is a study and exploration of language. Frequently using Chinese and calligraphy and other writing systems, Bing forces the viewer to acknowledge and then reject these systems. “We have such fixed thinking patterns, it takes people a while to adjust and reorder the way they think. It’s interesting how different people react” Some of his most famous works include the “Book of the Sky”, where he invented 4000 characters, hand-carved them into wood blocks and finally printed them to form a volumes and scroll of non-sensical text. He was appointed vice president of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2008.
