Ewa Juszkiewicz (b. 1984, Gdansk) challenges visual conventions and confronts stereotypical perceptions of feminine beauty in early-modern European painting. One of the most celebrated contemporary Polish painters, she is best known for deconstructing and reinterpreting the female subject in well-known historical artworks, imitating the original’s technique and style, but replacing the subject’s face with a grotesque or surreal distortion, such as the body of an insect, masses of hair, draped fabrics, a bouquet of flowers or tribal masks. Juszkiewicz received an M.A. in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in 2009, and a PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 2013. She lives and works in Warsaw.
