This new report revisits the 27 NextGen artists that we have covered since September 2020, and includes both primary and auction market updates, as well as expert views on the outlook for these artists' markets over the coming 12 months.
We launched our NextGen Artist Monitor series in September 2020 as an initiative to better understand the growing market for a younger generation of artists. Over the last two years we have selected and featured young artists who have achieved both commercial success, as well as attention from curators and museums around the world.
This new report includes the full ranking and market updates on the 27 young artists.
Market Trends
Although last year’s auction sales fell year-on-year, the market still saw an all-time high of NextGen artists featuring in auctions across Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips. This suggests continued interest, as the auction market sees more young artists entering the market for the first time, and could signal that the boom is far from over. The auction market seems to be shifting its focus from those artists that have reached six or seven figure prices, to younger artists at the more affordable end of the market.
