From a consumer or investor perspective, there seems to be an increasing appetite for fractional ownership in art and other assets, and many see these new investment models as a democratisation of an otherwise hard-to-access market place, particularly from an investment perspective. Recent research conducted by ArtTactic for the Hiscox Online Art Trade Report 2023 showed that while only 9% of the art buyers surveyed said they had invested in a share in an artwork or collectible over the past 12 months, 61% said they were likely to do so over the next 12 months; a sign that the art world is starting to take note of what is happening.

In this 3rd edition of the Fractional Ownership Monitor we take a closer look at some of the new initiatives and give an update of Masterworks, which we have monitored closely since our first report launched in August 2022. Building on previous analysis, we have also added more information about the composition of Masterworks’ artist portfolio, to provide a more holistic view of the current acquisition strategy.
