American artist Shara Hughes (b. 1981, Atlanta, Georgia) is widely recognized for her “invented landscapes” and surrealistic environments, which probe the boundary between representation and abstraction. Drawing from historical references such as Picasso or Matisse, yet with a visual language purely her own, she produces vibrantly chromatic paintings that function as subliminal passageways, alluding to spaces beyond the picture plane. Hughes earned a B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004 and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2011.
