This new ArtTactic report provides a unique insight into modern and contemporary Italian artists sold at auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips in the last five years. Over 2,750 lots and around 220 artists were analysed, across both regular Post-War and Contemporary evening and day sales, London’s Italian evening sales as well auctions in Milan. This report provides a unique insight into the auction market for Italian artists.

Italian Post-War and Contemporary art auctions see a 31.1% decline in sales in 2019:

After three years of subdued sales growth, the Italian Post-War and Contemporary artists at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips saw a 31.1% drop in sales last year, despite about the same number of lots coming up for auctions.

Higher levels of inventory sold through Milan:

Milan auctions saw a 30% increase in the number of lots sold in 2019, with Sotheby’s and Christie’s increasing the lots in their Milan sales by 20% and 48% respectively. Higher volumes of lower priced works helped offset the overall decline in the Italian Post-War and Contemporary art market in 2019.
