Italian Post-War and Contemporary art auctions see a 31.1% decline in sales in 2019:
After three years of subdued sales growth, the Italian Post-War and Contemporary artists at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips saw a 31.1% drop in sales last year, despite about the same number of lots coming up for auctions.
Higher levels of inventory sold through Milan:
Milan auctions saw a 30% increase in the number of lots sold in 2019, with Sotheby’s and Christie’s increasing the lots in their Milan sales by 20% and 48% respectively. Higher volumes of lower priced works helped offset the overall decline in the Italian Post-War and Contemporary art market in 2019.
