New York’s Evening Sales of Impressionist and Modern Art up 24.3% from November 2018, but down 48.9% from the market peak in May 2018

The Impressionist and Modern art evening sales in New York last week raised a total of $635,155,000* (excluding buyer’s premium), sitting comfortably within the centre of the total pre-sale estimate of $537,850,000 – $748,450,000. Despite a decrease of 48.9% from May 2018 (due to the additional Rockefeller single owner sale), there was an increase of 24.3% from November 2018.

Sotheby’s reclaims market share after 3-year decline. The strong performance of Sotheby’s top lots helped to reverse its downward market share trend. Building on the reversal of market share in November 2018, when Sotheby’s achieved 53.1% (up from 35.5% in November 2017), this sale achieved a 47.3% market share making the houses more even again in the Impressionist and Modern market.
