Indiewalls is an online art platform created to connect designers, interior decorators and businesses with artists. Ari Grazi joins us to discuss the commercial art space. First, Ari explains how Indiewalls is different than so many other art eCommerce websites. It focuses on corporate clients seeking art for commercial spaces, rather than individual collectors. Then, he reveals to what extent owners of commercial property, such as hotels, are concerned with the art that hangs on their walls. This, from both an aesthetic and cost perspective. Also, Ari tell us how much competition there is in this unique area of the art market. He identifies the types of artists who submit artworks on his platform and he shares some metrics on the company’s recent performance.

In this week’s edition of the ArtTactic Podcast, we hear from Gareth Harris.

Gareth Harris is chief contributing editor at The Art Newspaper and contributor to the Financial Times. He recaps the French contemporary art fair FIAC and touches on how Brexit may impact the UK art market. First, Gareth outlines some of the major differences between FIAC, which occurred last week in Paris, and Frieze, which took place the preceding week in London. Also, Gareth observed that many American collectors were missing from this year’s edition of FIAC and he speculates on why that was the case. Then, he summarises how the fair did from a sales perspective. Additionally, Gareth identifies some of the major aspects of the UK art market that may be impacted by Brexit. He also examines if/how participants in the market are preparing in any way for the eventual exit from the EU.

Mark Rappolt, editor-in-chief of ArtReview, joins us to discuss their annual Power 100.

Mark Rappolt explains how the annual ranking presents this year’s most influential people in the contemporary art world. The ranking started in 2002. The first edition ranked Charles Saatchi and Francois Pinault in the top two positions. In this interview, Mark reveals why Hans Ulrich Obrist was awarded  the top spot in 2016. He also discusses what story this year’s list reveals; in terms of where the most influence currently lies in the art world. Finally, Mark identifies which individuals experienced the greatest rise in the rankings from last year. He touches on some of the geographical trends in the rankings over the past few years.

Furthermore, she also identifies some of the less familiar artists in her article.  Sara reveals to what extent conceptual artists have recently appeared at auction. As well as why they appear in museum shows and in galleries.

Anders Petterson, founder of ArtTactic, joins us to discuss ArtTactic’s upcoming seminar. “How to Research Your Art Business Idea”. This is a 3-evening course occurring from September 12-14 in London.  Considering that we interview so many art entrepreneurs on the podcast, we thought you would enjoy hearing a preview of our seminar.  The course focuses on assisting art entrepreneurs with their business ideas.  First, Anders explains why ArtTactic is hosting the seminar at this time.  He cites the many ways in which the art industry is changing.  This includes the increasing entrepreneurship outside of the transaction based business models.  The increase in the industry’s size is addressed.  Equally the maturation of art as an asset class and the increasing development of technology, social media and e-commerce are addressed.  Then, Anders details what the course aims to achieve.   He also addresses what an aspiring or existing art entrepreneur can learn over the three evenings.

Richard Polsky – Richard Polsky Art Authentication

Richard Polsky, author, dealer and founder of Richard Polsky Art Authentication returns to the podcast to update us on his authentication business as well as discuss some recent happenings in the art world.

Richard updates as to how the authentication service is going thus far.  It was launched last October and focused exclusively on authenticating Andy Warhol artworks.

Richard reveals that he has expanded his authentication business to include Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.   He shares some of the key factors he considers when trying to authenticate their artworks.  Meanwhile, while the original authentication services for Warhol, Basquiat and Haring are now defunct he explores why in large part this is due to costly litigation.

Richard clarifies why he believes he will be able to avoid such costs. He also reveals to what extent he has communicated with these respective artists’ estates regarding his authentication business.

Lastly, Richard shares his thoughts on the current state of the art market. Finally, Anders reacts to the breaking news regarding Alec Baldwin, Mary Boone and Ross Bleckner.

Matthias Dorner – Wydr

We’re here with Matthias Dorner.  

Matthias is founder of Wydr, which is a new start-up considered to be Tinder for the art world. First, Matthias walks us through how someone uses Wydr.   He then explains how similar the app is is to Tinder.

Then, Matthias argues for viewing art one work at a time using a swiping motion.  This he explains is preferable over the traditional way of viewing artwork online, many thumbnails at a time. Also, Matthias shares his thoughts regarding to what extent he believes the art world will eventually adopt this format of viewing artworks.

Lastly, Matthias explains why Wydr is so appealing to millennials and also what type of artists are choosing to feature their artwork on the app.

Max Fishko – Seattle Art Fair

First, Max describes the Seattle art scene to us as well as the collecting community there. Then, he reveals Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s motivation for establishing the Seattle Art Fair last year and his involvement in the fair.
