In this week’s edition of the ArtTactic Podcast, Christopher Bedford, director of The Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University.

Christopher Bedford updates us on some of the recent activities at the museum. Chris shares how he has lead the museum past some of the negative publicity garnered in 2009. At that difficult time Brandeis announced it  would close the museum and sell its permanent collection to curtail losses.  This policy associated with the global financial crisis, was never implemented.

Then, he details the incredible story of the museum’s first director, Sam Hunter. How the original director,  developed an incredible contemporary art collection for the museum in the 1960’s on a limited budget. Also, Chris tells us how collectors today can learn from Sam Hunter’s approach to building the museum’s collection for their own private art collections.

Further, Chris reveals the importance of balance. Chris explains how he balances exhibiting. This means balancing works from the museum’s permanent collection versus organising exhibitions featuring art from outside the museum’s collection.

Lastly, Chris explains why he has focused so much on strengthening the relationship between museum and student body at Brandeis University.

First, Bernadine shares some of the most recent success stories in which she was able to connect collectors and museum curators with an artwork ending up in a museum show. Then, she discusses how the company has grown since we originally had her on the podcast a few years ago, including the introduction of a new product enabling museums to more easily communicate regarding potential multi-location museum shows.  Lastly, Bernadine identifies some of the challenges the three-year old company faces moving forward.

Ted updates us on two interesting developments occurring within the US, one focused on the constitutionality of California’s Resale Royalty Act and the other is on the possibility of introducing a resale royalty on a federal level, throughout the US. Then, he discusses the impact advances in social media and technology have had on artists and their rights on their artworks. Lastly, Ted takes us behind the scenes detailing some of the components that go into ad campaigns when they utilize artists’ artworks.

Bernadine Bröcker – Vastari

In this week’s episode of the ArtTactic Podcast, we speak with Bernadine Bröcker, director of Vastari, an online platform focused on optimizing communcation between collectors and curators/museums. First, Bernadine discusses a current art world dilemma, in which museums have difficulty locating artworks for upcoming exhibitions, while collectors also have no medium to make their artworks available to museums for shows. Then, she discusses the process in which collectors can upload their works onto the site, how museum curators peruse artworks on the online platform and ultimately how these two can connect. First, David analyzes the tax benefits of storing artwork and other goods within a freeport. Then, he walks us through a hypothetical scenario describing the process in which a dealer brings a work into the freeport, sells the work within the freeport and the new owner of the work leaves with the artwork. Additionally, David discusses the important of the freeport being located within the airport, while also detailing the different services offered within the freeport. Jonathan Lee – Rose Art Museum

In this episode of the ArtTactic Podcast were joined by Jonathan Lee, chair of The Rose Art Museum Board of Directors at Brandeis University. Jonathan talks in detail about several issues pertaining to Brandeis Universitys controversial decision to close the Rose Art Museum. Jonathan first shares the board’s initial reaction to the announcement of the closing of the museum from both a legal and ethical perspective. He also explains why he wouldn’t be okay with Brandeis University selling part of the museum collection even if the academic standards of the university are at stake. Lastly, Jonathan speaks about the proposed transformation of the Rose Art Museum space into a teaching center and what it would be like without the now former Director Michael Rush.
