Arpita Singh was bon in Bara Nagar, West Bengal, India. She lives and works in New Delhi. Afflicted by the problems that are faced each and everyday by women, her country and the world in general, Singh paints the range of emotions that she exchanges with these subjects – from sorrow to joy and suffering to hope. Singh works both in oil and watercolour. Her palette is generally vibrant with pinks and blues often dominating. Described as a figurative and modernist artist, Arpita Singh still makes it a point to stay tuned in to traditional Indian art forms and aesthetics, like miniaturist painting and different folk art. Singh has won several awards throughout her career, including at the 1981 and 1992 All-India Drawing Exhibitions in Chandigarh, the 1987 Algeria Biennale, and the 1991 Parishad Samman from the Sahitya Kala Parishad, New Delhi. In 2011, the Government of India awarded her with the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian honours. She has showed her works in more than twenty solo exhibitions all over India, including several in Chandigarh, Bhopal, Mumbai and New Delhi.
